Bengaluru’s New Green Legacy: The 153-Acre Basavanna Biodiversity Park

For over 150 years, Bengaluru—the beloved "Garden City"—has waited for a new large-scale urban park. While the city’s skyline has been dominated by glass facades and concrete corridors, a historic shift is finally taking place.

The Karnataka State Cabinet has officially greenlit the Vishwa Guru Basavanna Biodiversity Park, a massive 153.39-acre ecological marvel set to transform North Bengaluru. This landmark project marks the city's third-largest "lung space," following in the footsteps of the iconic Lalbagh (1760) and CubbonPark (1870).

The Vision: From Eucalyptus to Native Forests

Located in Madappanahalli near Yelahanka, the site currently houses eucalyptus and acacia plantations. In a bold move toward ecological restoration, these non-native species will be replaced by indigenous trees and flora native to the Western Ghats.

Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, the visionary behind the project, emphasized that this park is a necessity for the city's future:

"Bengaluru should not become another gas chamber. This park is an unfulfilled dream of nature lovers for over a century and a half."

What to Expect: Features of the Eco Park

The project is budgeted at ₹250 crore, with an initial ₹50 crore sanctioned for Phase 1. Designed as a multi-use conservation and education hub, the park will feature:

  • Five Themed Zones: Including a specialized medicinal plant grove and a sprawling arboretum.
  • Wildlife Havens: A dedicated bird sanctuary named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and a mini-zoo honoring Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.
  • Educational Hubs: An interpretation center to teach students and visitors about local biodiversity and conservation.
  • Native Restoration: Large-scale planting of species like Nandi, Honne, Bilva, and Mahabilva to revive the local ecosystem.

Strategic Importance for North Bengaluru

The park’s location is a game-changer for North Bengaluru. It sits strategically near the upcoming Dr. Shivaram Karanth Layout, which is expected to house over 200,000 residents.

For the fast-growing populations of Yelahanka, Devanahalli, and Sahakar Nagar, this park will serve as:

  1. A vital recreational retreat for families and fitness enthusiasts.
  2. A natural ecological buffer against urban heat.
  3. A significant driver for long-term property value appreciation in the region.

The Road Ahead

The government has set an ambitious three-year completion target (aiming for 2029). With groundwork beginning immediately, the Basavanna Biodiversity Park is more than just a garden; it is a commitment to returning Bengaluru to its roots as a sustainable, breathable, and vibrant city.
